![]() The Brass’s have lots of fond memories of their time at the mill, including one mix-up that happened countless times. She says the mill had customers from Florida to Canada, and she enjoyed getting to speak to people from all over and helping to solve their problems. Norma Brass at the desk where she worked the switchboard at the Newton Falls Paper Mill. ![]() Norma says the Hynes couple sang at her and Sam’s wedding, gave their daughter a scholarship to go to university, and threw elaborate Christmas parties for the employees’ children with presents bought in New York City. Norma says that the couple knew everyone's name, from the men working the paper machines to the secretaries in the office. Although it was Ronald who officially ran the mill, Sam says that Esther was the real boss. The Brasses say that the mill was like a big family – and Esther Hynes kept it that way.Įverybody was friendly, and you better be, or else you went to see Esther! In particular, they remember the leadership of Ronald and Esther Hynes, who ran the mill for decades in the 20th century. The Brass couple say they loved their time at the mill, which closed for good in 2010. For much of that time, they both worked at the Newton Falls Paper Mill, which employed hundreds of people in the Clifton Fine area in its heyday.
